 Ease of Setup

With TSYS you’ll find a fairly standard sign-up process. Approval isn’t instantaneous and can take 24-48 hours for approval though they do boast a higher acceptance rate thanks in part to the scale of the organization. TSYS processes over one trillion per year in sales, making them the second largest card processor in the U.S.

You can request a quote through the TSYS website by submitting basic contact information. A representative returns your contact typically within the same day, collecting additional information about your organization, how you do business, what you sell (product service) and similar information. This data is used to help calculate your rates. While they do have simplified flat-rate pricing packages your rates can still be negotiated when you sign up with a new account.

During this call the information you provide can also help the representative determine if you need to be setup with the proprietary online gateway, or if your business may benefit from their free POS systems that are offered as part of the agreement.



One of the standout features of TSYS is the proprietary gateway. Unlike other merchant services that utilize a service like Authorize.net, TSYS has designed their own.  They offer API integration meaning you can connect the payment gateway with other online platforms (like an ecommerce store), simplifying payment processing for your customers.

In addition there is a virtual terminal so you can manually enter card info to accept payment from any device with an internet connection via a web browser. This is handy if you or your team is out in the field handling sales transaction. Coupled with the mobile processing app (an additional $5 fee to use if you choose to add it on to your account) you can ensure that you’ll always be able to accept customer payments no matter where you’re at.

For more static sales such as a brick and mortar location, TSYS has a varied selection of EMV ready credit card machines as well as iPad POS systems that can be leased under contract.

With any account you’ll have access to online reporting that you can view from anywhere you have an internet connection, even via your smartphone. This provides you with detailed real-time as well as historic reports on sales and transaction data for any point in time.

If you want to expand your marketing campaigns to include loyalty programs, TSYS offers reward and gift programs to help you increase revenue and attract new customers via customizable gift cards as well as electronic gifting options.


Customer Support 

The fact that TSYS offers 24/7 customer support is terrific. Many businesses operate outside of the standard 9 to 5 business hours so it’s important to be able to reach someone if there’s an issue – even if it’s 2am on a Sunday. That 24/7 customer support covers their merchant service as well as any equipment you may have leased as well as their other payment processing options including the virtual gateway and mobile processing.

Unfortunately, that customer support is limited to the telephone. It would have been nice to see additional support options such as live chat or a ticket system given the scale of the company.  Likewise, self-help options including a support community, FAQ or knowledgebase would be beneficial for merchants who may not have the time to stop what they’re doing and hold on the phone. Thankfully their response time on phone calls is fairly quick, especially during normal daytime business hours.


Rates & Fees

Rates with just about any merchant service provider will typically be negotiable and that applies to TSYS as well – since no two businesses are the same. With that said, TSYS does offer some standardized pricing packages on their website and that transparency is greatly appreciated.

They offer 3 flat-rate plans for processing which include:

Pursue Plan: 2.5% swipe rate with a 3.5% keyed rate. $0.20 transaction fee with a $9.95 monthly service fee and no minimum card volume.

Grow Plan : 1.99% swipe rate with a 3.1% keyed rate. $0.20 transaction fee with a $19.95 monthly service fee and $100,000 minimum card volume.

Accelerate Plan: 1.7% swipe rate with a 3% keyed rate. $0.20 transaction fee with a $49.95 monthly service fee and $250,000 minimum card volume.

The Pursue and Grow plans both include a free credit card reader that is EMV, NFC and Apple Pay capable. If you choose the Accelerate plan it comes with a Tablet POS, card reader, cash drawer and printer.

There are no setup fees with any of the simplified pricing packages but keep in mind that contract agreements are in place where equipment is leased and early termination fees can apply on any long term agreement. On the upside, you won’t have to deal with variable rates based on the types of cards you accept.


Processing Options

TSYS offers a number of processing options depending on how you want to accept cards and how your customers want to pay.

For mobile businesses you can use the mobile app to accept payments anywhere you go, so your marketing and sales teams could easily accept payments during community, public or B2B events such as tradeshows. You can also use the virtual terminal to process these types of orders as well as phone and email transactions.

The proprietary gateway can be easily integrated with your website or ecommerce store to process customer payments automatically, without the need for manual processing.

For point of sale transactions, TSYS offers POS readers (iPad) as well as credit card terminals/readers so you can outfit your store to take advantage of reduced swipe rates.


Accepted Payment Types

TSYS accepts all major credit cards including Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. You can also accept chip payments and Apple Pay with their readers as well as NFC (Near Field Communication). Accepted payments also include electronic check, gift card and EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) processing.



TSYS is one of few merchant service providers to be transparent with rates while eliminating hidden fees and offering flat rate pricing. If you’re processing high volumes each month you can likely negotiate better rates than those in the available packages, however those packages offer the perfect starting point for growing businesses that are working to scale their sales volume. Coupled with good customer service and a long standing positive reputation they’re a great choice for a merchant processor you can trust to handle your business and revenue properly.
