Heartland may not be the absolute cheapest when it comes to processing credit cards, but it brings an amazing amount of value to the table. Without even considering the other services being offered, there are some solid benefits that come from processing charges through Heartland. This includes consolidated statements, next day funding (important for growing businesses to have access to their money quickly), integration for e-Commerce to take your business online, and real-time reporting so you can stay on top of your sales and promotions.
Couple that with the wide variety of accepted payment methods and it’s extremely easy for customers to pay. Reducing that payment friction at checkout greatly reduces customer churn, keeps customers in your store, and is guaranteed to boost revenue.
Accepted payment methods include: EMV (secure chip cards), Apple pay, Samsung pay, Android pay, Credit and Debit, Gift cards.
Heartland Payment Systems isn’t just a credit card processor. One of the greatest benefits to doing business with this company is the expansive list of services and products it offers. Where many processors have a few value-added services to help you behind the scenes, Heartland Payment Systems has a vast network of services, including: Loyalty programs for your business, point of sale systems and gift card setup, billing solutions and merchant vendor invoicing, payroll services, financial lending, managed network solutions, and micropayments.
And that’s just to name a few. No matter which value-added-product you tack on, you’ll still get the same access to the company’s stellar customer service (which we’ll get into a little later.)
One of the most frustrating parts of finding the best merchant processor, is dealing with all the hidden fees, fine print, and unexpected costs of getting setup. Truth be told, any merchant service is relatively easy to use once you have the account and equipment in place.
Modern credit terminals don’t vary much, and the process for running approvals in a virtual gateway is often the same – handled by gateway services like Authorize.net
One of the great parts about dealing with Heartland Payment systems is it makes the setup process incredibly easy and stress free. You don’t have to deal with the usual smoke and mirrors, sales gimmicks, hidden agendas, surprise fees, or deals that are simply too good to be true.
The only part that slows things down is the setup process, which takes a few steps:
That’s a bit on the slow side for an industry that often guarantees approval in 24-48 hours on many accounts. On the upside, there’s something appealing about physically meeting with an agent to discuss aspects of the program, costs, setup and more.
After setting up an account, it’s just a matter of getting your terminals (physical or virtual) in place, and using your web-based dashboard to begin managing your account.
What really sets Heartland Payment Systems apart from other merchant processors is the volume of value added services. Anything a company can offer to make it easier for you to manage your business is a bonus, and Heartland Payment Systems is right there with plenty of solutions.
Most notable is its Payroll services, designed to simplify the load for small business owners. While it may not have a feature list as robust as some of the big contenders in the payroll industry, it’s still an impressive list including: employee time tracking, hr support services, comprehensive reporting, deductions and garnishments, tax withholding, benefit payments and accruals, and flexible payroll scheduling.
The primary focus is to save the small business owner money, which shows in the simplified pricing model used for payroll features as well as the transparent interchange-plus pricing used for credit card processing.
It should be noted that the representatives are also very open about costs and fees associated with a merchant processor account. When we spoke with an agent, they made it quite clear about a flat fee for processing revenue under $50k per year. The company certainly stands by its “no hidden fees” policy.
It’s nice to see a merchant processor that recognizes business doesn’t run on banking hours. All kinds of problems can occur when the sun sets, people leave work, and start hitting the strip to buy the products they need/want.
Heartland Payment Systems pulled out all the stops creating a robust customer service and support center, with 24/7/365 support available in house from its U.S. based call center.
Rather than dealing with ticket systems that send your issue off into the void while you wait, Heartland Payment Systems gets you in touch with a representative immediately, regardless of the time or day.
In fact, there are multiple dedicated support numbers for each branch of the organization, so you don’t have to worry about getting transferred multiple times just to find the right department.
If your issue isn’t terribly urgent, there are plenty of other support options available which include:
Pricing is clean and transparent with Heartland Payment Systems. It offers interchange-plus to give you full disclosure into how much you’re paying the processor, and how much of the payments go toward the card brands.
One key item to note with pricing is that if you process less than $50k per year, the company will charge you a flat rate of $59 per month on top of your interchange fees. This is in addition to a $0.05 per transaction fee.
The good news with Heartland Payment Systems is you won’t have to worry about paying annual fees, PCI fees, or any kind of statement fee on top of the $59 + interchange. This kind of pricing may bump the overhead cost for a smaller startup, but otherwise makes it a near perfect processor for growing businesses.
Heartland Payment Systems has a relatively standard contract – It’s a 3-year term that auto-renews if you don’t provide a cancellation notice 90 days before the end of the contract. Any early termination results in a $295 early termination fee.
This is standard in most cases where you sign on with a processor to get equipment leased, or receive reduced-rate services. Keep in mind that many sales reps are willing to negotiate in order to close on new accounts, so it’s possible to have early termination fees removed, or get contract term lengths reduced to as low as a year.
Heartland Payment Systems offers a wide variety of services, including merchant processing with very attractive rates – maybe not for a small startup though. For growing business, the great rates and fast turnaround on batch closure, along with the value-added services like HR and payroll, make it a go-to solution to keep your business on the move.
The headquarters of Heartland Payment Systems rests in Princeton, New Jersey, but there are branch offices scattered all across the nation. That’s no surprise considering it has been operating since 1997, and carries with it a reputation for being an industry leader in security and innovative solutions.
Heartland Payment Systems is also ranked among the top credit card processors (5th in 2016 by transaction volume), processing some $120 billion annually from more than a quarter million merchants.
